Seat Belt - Mechanical Component
IssueSummary//Seat belts in today\'s cars in the front positions are of the pre-tensioner design. They are parts of both the restraint and airbag systems. They are currently classified as "body" parts, in our opinion, that opinion needs to change with their inclusion into the airbag systems. By your definition (See DEG 542) they are mechanical. "...a mechanical component is defined as a part that transforms one form of energy into another." This definition would clearly include both seat belt pre-tensioners and seat belt buckles of the pre-tensioning type as mechanical devices. They transform the electrical signal from the air bag control unit into the mechanical motion that both tightens and locks the seat belt.

SuggestedAction//Please review and consider changing the database for all seat belt pre-tensioners and seat belt buckle pre-tensioners from body to mechanical part designation.

IP Explanation
Research Response: MOTOR stated:
After reviewing feedback from our customers concerning our component classification definition, we have determined that a revision to the Guide To Estimating component classification definition is appropriate. Under the new definition, seatbelts and buckles with integral pretensioners will not fall under the mechanical component classification. Verbiage for the revised component classification definition is under review and is not available at this time, but the finalized verbiage will appear in the fall 2010 revision of the MOTOR Guide To Estimating.
